Wednesday 4th March – Hike (snow shoe) **** Mijoux - sunny periods
We were surprised to wake to 2” of snow! We had a leisurely start and
had a lay in reading. Mag walked to the shop in the village to get some
bread. We had breakfast and read for a bit longer then got all our snow
shoe gear out of the top box. We set out across the piste into the village
then out onto the fields beyond. There is a pisted footpath which we
followed for a little while and we really didn’t need the snow shoes at
the beginning but put them on rather than carry them. We decided to carry
on past the turning point of the pisted footpath and followed the cross
country piste for a while. You are not supposed to walk on these tracks
but there were many other footprints so we didn’t feel too bad! When we
crossed over a bridge we noticed some snow shoe prints walking back towards
Mijoux across the fields on the other side of the river so we followed them
(ignoring the Prive sign!). The person or people who had made them knew
where they were going because the path snaked up and back across the fields
up quite a steep hill before disappearing through the woods. The weather
was a mixed bag with cloud and blue sky and even a light snow shower. We
were really pleased to hear a cry above us and looked up to see a beautiful
Eagle soaring in the blue sky with snow falling at the same time! We have
no idea what kind of eagle it was but it was far too big for a buzzard. We
stopped on a steep bank to eat our picnic and watched several small birds
crossing from tree to tree – no idea what they were either!! Back down
the sloping field towards the river and even through the river at some
points, still following the other shoe prints. We came back to the pisted
footpath and watched some cross country skiers making the same mistakes we
did on a downhill stretch – stopping by falling over! We followed the
path up to the ski lifts at the beginning of the village and then made our
way back up to the van. We had been out nearly 4 hours and were amazed we
had only walked just on four miles because we were shattered!! Had just
taken our boots off and got in the van when the most amazing blizzard
started! You had to feel for the people on the chair lift and on the
piste! We were very lucky not to be caught out in it and spent the rest of
the afternoon reading, drinking hot drinks, and eating French bread, butter
and apricot jam and then chocolate!!
